100th birthday of Fr. Danijel
Father Danijel Mihatov,TOR, a member of the Province of Saint Jerome in Croatia, is the oldest friar of our Order. On Thursday, March 31, 2016 he celebrated his 100th birthday. The first part of the celebration was held with a Eucharistic Liturgy in the convent of St. Francis of Assisi in Krk (an island in the Adriatic Sea) with the presence of two bishops: the bishop of the Diocese of Krk, the Most Rev. Ivica Petanjak and the bishop emeritus, Valter Zupan. Also present were the Minister Provincial of the Province of St. Jerome, the Very Rev. Niko Barun, many friars, priests of the diocese and the faithful who attended the Mass. After the Mass, many expressed their best wishes to the TOR Centenarian. Fr. Danijel thanked the Divine Mercy of God for the gift of a long life and he insisted on the most important thing in life, namely to give your time to God. The Minister General in a letter to Fr. Danijel thanked him for 83 years of his life lived in vows as a religious and for 76 years of life as a priest. The national media followed this event, because of its exceptionality.
Fr. Danijel was born March 31, 1916 at Poljice, on the island of Ugljan. He entered the Province in 1927, and started the novitiate in 1932. In 1933, he made his temporary vows and solemn vows in 1937. He was ordained a priest in 1940. During his life, Fr. Danijel held various positions: catechist, missionary in Germany to the Croatian migrant workers, the local minister of the various convents, the provincial minister and provincial treasurer. He now lives in the convent in friary of St. Francis in Krk where every day he dedicates time to the study of the Scriptures. It is interesting to note that he has born a subject of the Emperor Franz Joseph of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, lived through WWI, the short independence of Croatia, WWII, the suppression of the communists with the creation of Yugoslavia and finally the war for Croatian independence in 1991. He was also born under the pontificate of Benedict XV and now serves his ninth pontiff, Pope Francis.
We wish him a very happy 100th birthday and invoke God's blessing!
